Michelle's Journey and Expertise in Holistic Health

Hi, I'm Michelle, a former Veterinary Nurse with 11 years of experience. My passion for health and fitness fuels my hobbies, which include running, hiking with my dog Chester, paddle boarding, mountain biking, and a bit of CrossFit. My journey into holistic health began after experiencing remarkable results from Tuina treatments for my back pain, inspiring me to study and practice this ancient healing art.

What is Tuina?
Tuina (pronounced Twee-nah) is a Chinese therapeutic and medical massage, considered to be at least 2,000 years old and the most tried and tested massage in the world. This deep tissue massage stimulates specific acupuncture points to assist in the correct flow of energy (chi) around the meridian system, promoting balance in the mind and body. Unlike other massages, Tuina is performed with the patient fully clothed.

Benefits of Tuina

Tuina treatments offer a range of benefits, including:

  • Relief from sports and general injuries

  • Reduction of aches and pains

  • Improved circulation

  • Better alignment of joints

  • Enhanced immune function

  • Overall wellbeing

Patients often report feeling energized or relaxed, with an immediate relief of symptoms, improved sleep, and reduced stress following treatments.

Complementary Therapies: Cupping and Gua-sha

In addition to Tuina, I also practice Cupping and Gua-sha, both ancient therapies that complement Tuina.

Cupping

Cupping involves using special cups on the skin to provide numerous benefits, such as:

  • Pain relief

  • Reduced inflammation

  • Improved range of movement

  • Increased circulation

  • Removal of toxins

  • Enhanced appearance of cellulite

Gua-sha

Gua-sha involves using special scraping tools to release fascia and soft tissues. Also known as the Graston Technique, this therapy:

  • Breaks down scar tissue and adhesions

  • Improves circulation

  • Reduces pain and inflammation

Both Cupping and Gua-sha work synergistically with Tuina to enhance overall health and wellbeing.

3 Benefits of Massage Therapy

Relaxes Tense Muscles
A massage therapist will use a variety of techniques to treat your problem. Massage therapy can reduce tension, lessen pain, improve flexibility, and leave you feeling relaxed. Massage therapy will also cause your body to release endorphins, which will boost your serotonin and dopamine levels. These will contribute to a sense of relaxation and less pain.

Better Blood Circulation
The increased blood circulation stimulated by massage therapy will help promote healing as it brings the needed blood supply to your tense or injured muscles. A massage therapist will direct the blood supply to the affected areas of your body using various skillful techniques. Massage therapy has many benefits including lowering your blood pressure, increasing oxygen delivery, providing more nutrients to your muscles, and better muscular function.

Better Posture
Massage therapy improves your posture by releasing the tension from your muscle and ligaments, allowing you to regain proper posture. Poor posture is a major cause of muscle pain, back pain, and neck pain. Back pain is often the result of bad posture while standing or sitting. Chronic back is so common it is the number one reason for missing work and the second leading cause of disability. Poor posture will strain your hips, legs, and glutes.

Combining Massage Therapy and Chiropractic Care

Combining chiropractic care and massage therapy provides longer-lasting and more beneficial results than using either treatment on its own. Our body’s skeletal system and muscles are meant to work together synergistically. So, treating both together improves the way our body functions.

A chiropractor adjusts the neck, spine, and other musculoskeletal systems while a massage therapist treats soft tissues. Having your spine aligned correctly allows your body to heal itself better. Chiropractic adjustments allow your joints to move better and reduce inflammation while increasing mobility. Chiropractic care will improve the function of your nervous system, strengthen your immune system, and help reduce pain.

Chiropractic adjustments are more effective when your muscles aren’t tense. In fact, muscular tension can cause subluxations (misalignments) to the spine that require chiropractic adjustments to correct. This is part of why many chiropractors will offer massage therapy services at their practice and often recommend getting a massage before a chiropractic adjustment. When your joints are properly aligned after a chiropractic adjustment, the improved nerve flow helps the soft tissues manipulated during your massage heal quicker. Combining chiropractic adjustments and massage therapy also helps sustain optimal spinal alignment longer.

By combining massage therapy with your chiropractic care, you can also experience:

  • Faster recovery and healing from pain and injuries

  • Improvement to the function of your nervous system

  • Increased blood flow and better circulation

  • Increased flexibility and a greater range of motion

  • Reduced inflammation
